 KHOVANSKYGATE: A National Enquiry

by Modest Musorgsky,
a new English version by Max Hoehn,
directed by Graham Vick,
with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stuart Stratford

Birmingham Opera Company Chorus, Actors and Dancers

22, 24, 28, 30 April and 2 May 2014 at 7.00pm

The Freedom Tent, Cannon Hill, The People's Park.

KHOVANSKYGATE: A National Enquiry raises strikingly modern parallels; the story takes place in a Russia divided by powerful conservative forces and growing Westernising influence. Musorgsky paints a devastating portrait of a nation on the brink of collapse; torn apart by state corruption, religious fanaticism, social inequality and ethnic cleansing.

An Official UK - Russia Year of Culture 2014 Event, the powerful political drama about rebellion and revolution will be performed in Birmingham. Director Graham Vick was one of the first international directors to be invited behind the Iron Curtain, by Valery Gergiev to direct Prokofiev’sWar and Peace at the Kirov in 1991. Over 30 years later his current new production of Musorgsky’s Boris Godunov can be seen this year at the Mariinsky Theatre. Vick now directs Musorgsky’s final opera for the first time and in the UK.

Opera while you shop!

Birmingham Opera Company and Ex Cathedra, Arts Champions for Ladywood District

On an ordinary day in March, we decided to give shoppers at Springhill Tesco Superstore something a little extraordinary - a performance by two of our professional soloists, Joseph Guyton and Stephanie Corley, who will be playing Prince Andrei and Emma in our upcoming production, KHOVANSKYGATE: A National Enquiry.
Accompanied by the wonderful Sergey Rybin on piano, the singers performed a repertoire of opera favourites from Tosca, Madame Butterfly and Othello.
