Mittwoch Wins Top Award
Birmingham Opera Company's production of Mittwoch aus Licht / Wednesday from Light won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera and Music Theatre in last night's ceremony. Graham Vick's production was described by the judges as "bold in imagination and brilliant in accomplishment, both hallmarks of this company's approach to reinventing opera for today". Speaking on film (Graham's currently working in Tokyo), he talks of smiling when thinking of last summer - the summer of Mittwoch and the 2012 Festival. There were many challenges - 4 helicopters and camels amongst them - but Stockhausen's genius brought it all together in a spirit of collaboration - the very theme of Mittwoch aus Licht.
Here's some quick highlights from the opera and Graham Vick's acceptance speech:
Chair Of The Board
Birmingham Opera Company is known world-wide for its radical and popular opera productions. The city is our opera house - canal tow path, burn-out ice rink, shopping centre; our audiences are like no other. Graham Vick, a visionary director in demand at all the world's great opera houses, leads the company. We're looking for a confident and equally daring individual to become Chair of the Board of Trustees to help us secure a future for opera in Birmingham and beyond.
Closing Date 27th May 2013
